The Impact of Frax on Student Achievement

Frax produces positive, evidence-based results in math.

Break through the barriers to learning fractions.

Research shows that Frax gives all students the ability to master fractions—increasing their math performance, building their self-confidence, and laying the foundation for ongoing success in math.

The Frax approach has proven effective in study after study. The Digital Promise ESSA Tier 3 Certification demonstrates that Frax, built on learning sciences research, positively impacts student learning through strong quantitative evidence.

ESSA Tier 2 Study Reveals Frax Boosts Math Achievement

A longitudinal study on the use of Frax shows significant long-term benefits for student achievement. In Year 1, 3rd and 4th graders who used Frax showed substantial gains in math, especially the most at-risk students. By Year 2, these gains were maintained. Additionally, new Frax users across grades 3-5 were able to catch up to their peers, showing the flexibility and strength of Frax for both instruction and remediation.

Research Report

Grade-level proficiency 2.5x more likely with Frax and Reflex.

2nd graders who scored two or more grade levels below in math at the start of year one improved by an average of 11 percentile points when they used Reflex, compared to 5 percentile points in non-users. When those same Reflex users advanced to 3rd grade and used Frax, students were 2.5x more likely to reach on-grade level math proficiency by the end of 3rd grade compared to non-users.

Research Brief

Frax and Reflex power math achievement gains.

In a large suburban Florida school district, students who used Reflex and Frax had statistically more significant math score gains in i-Ready compared to non-users. Across all students, Reflex and Frax users were 60% more likely to meet or exceed typical growth goals and 2x more likely to meet or exceed aspirational stretch growth goals.

Research Brief

Frax usage results in 100% of students meeting fractions proficiency after a 6-month pilot implementation.

A two-year study found that all students who used Frax met or exceeded 3rd-grade proficiency standards, with continued gains extending into 4th grade.

Research Brief

At-risk students who used Frax were more likely to meet grade-level standards and experience growth on summative assessments.

Students who completed Frax Sector 1 were significantly more likely to meet or exceed grade-level proficiency standards on their end-of-year Smarter Balanced Summative state assessment compared to similar students who did not use Frax.

Third-Party Evaluation

Frax helps academically at-risk students reach grade-level proficiency.

Explore Learning contracted with LearnPlatform, a third-party Edtech research company, to examine the relationship between student usage of Frax and learning outcomes. LearnPlatform designed the study to satisfy Level III requirements (Promising Evidence) according to the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).

The study found more Frax usage was significantly related to higher math achievement. Importantly, this relationship was also found among academically at-risk students and students who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

Research Brief

Learners who struggle in math achieve success with Frax

In a recent study, our Research Team investigated Frax Sector I as a math intervention to support proficiency in grade-level mathematics standards for students identified as “struggling learners” by 3rd-grade benchmark testing. Find out more about this and the significant implications for use with older students.

Research Brief

Frax significantly boosts math achievement for all 3rd graders

Students who used Frax were significantly more likely to achieve grade-level proficiency by the end of 3rd grade, regardless of their starting achievement levels.

Everybody's Talking About Frax

“Frax is by far the best program I have seen for fractions. Even the kids who experience math challenges seem to ‘get’ fractions. Now, when any fraction related math comes up in our lessons, they all seem to know the correct answer!”

- Frax Teacher, Cloquet Independent School District 94, MN

"I use Frax in my classes. On our mid-year screener, my students outperformed the other 3rd grade classes that don’t use Frax. My two classes’ average point increase was double that of the other five classes."

- Frax Teacher, Liberty Hill Independent School District, TX

"My kids absolutely love Frax! Their abilities vary, but ALL my students feel success with Frax. They have a much better grasp on fractions overall and it has really made a difference in what we are able to do in class."

- Frax Teacher, Redwood Preparatory Charter School, CA

"My students are super sad that there are only 27 missions in Frax Sector 1. They are literally begging to do more fraction work! One student who usually struggles with math concepts completed all of the missions and is now getting A’s in math instead of C’s."

- Frax Teacher, Greenville Co School District, SC

"My students LOVE Frax! They now regularly say things like ‘Well I know that 1/4 + 1/4 = 1/2...’ or ‘I know that 3/6 = 1/2...’, which were not things they were saying before working on Frax. The improvement in their fraction fluency has been noticeable."

- Frax Teacher, Governor Wentworth Regional School District, NH
