Teaching Fractions with Frax
Teaching fractions can be challenging. Pizza pies and candy bars are real world fraction examples, but they may make it difficult for students to see fractions as actual numbers. On the other hand, when students are introduced to denominators and numerators, they may get mixed up and think fractions are two separate whole numbers rather than a single number—which is referred to as whole number bias.
How can teaching fractions be made easier? Research shows that when students understand fractions as numbers and how they relate to other numbers, they have more success than through more traditional instruction.
ExploreLearning Frax helps you teach students that fractions are numbers first. Rooted in the latest fractions research, our online fractions program helps students overcome whole number bias. Through Frax’s adaptive story-driven missions, students get fractions practice and build fundamental fractions knowledge to succeed in school and beyond.
Fractions Greater Than 1
With Frax, students work with fractions greater than 1 from the very beginning. Fractions are introduced using length and block models. Students then get the chance to build fractions that are less than and greater than 1.
Benchmark Fractions
Students gain familiarity with benchmark fractions, like ½ and ¼, through Frax’s exciting games and activities. Students learn how to represent benchmark fractions in numeric form, word form, and block model.
Ordering Fractions
Through game-based lessons, Frax teaches students how to order fractions. Students are asked to name fractions on a number line, as well as place points on a number line.
Comparing Fractions
Frax’s comparing fractions games give students the opportunity to analyze the sizes of different fractions. Students compare the sizes of multiple representations of fractions, including the length of different block models.
Equivalent Fractions
With Frax’s equivalent fractions activities, students practice evaluating whether two fractions are equivalent or not using block models, number lines, and shaded area models.
Translating Fractions to Other Forms
In Frax Sector 2 students learn to translate numbers to other forms. Through a variety of exciting games and challenges, students work on translating whole numbers, mixed numbers, and fractions.
Addition and Subtraction of Mixed Fractions
In Frax Sector 2 students are introduced to early fraction arithmetic. Students learn to add and subtract mixed fractions, and learn to add and subtract on number lines to deepen their understanding.
Decimal Fractions
Through Frax Sector 2’s engaging decimal fraction activities students continue to grow their skills. Engaging activities help students to identify fractions in tenths and hundredths, and identify the corresponding decimal.

Everybody's Talking About Frax
“Frax is by far the best program I have seen for fractions. Even the kids who experience math challenges seem to ‘get’ fractions. Now, when any fraction related math comes up in our lessons, they all seem to know the correct answer!”
- Frax Teacher, Cloquet Independent School District 94, MN"I use Frax in my classes. On our mid-year screener, my students outperformed the other 3rd grade classes that don’t use Frax. My two classes’ average point increase was double that of the other five classes."
- Frax Teacher, Liberty Hill Independent School District, TX"My kids absolutely love Frax! Their abilities vary, but ALL my students feel success with Frax. They have a much better grasp on fractions overall and it has really made a difference in what we are able to do in class."
- Frax Teacher, Redwood Preparatory Charter School, CA"My students are super sad that there are only 27 missions in Frax Sector 1. They are literally begging to do more fraction work! One student who usually struggles with math concepts completed all of the missions and is now getting A’s in math instead of C’s."
- Frax Teacher, Greenville Co School District, SC"My students LOVE Frax! They now regularly say things like ‘Well I know that 1/4 + 1/4 = 1/2...’ or ‘I know that 3/6 = 1/2...’, which were not things they were saying before working on Frax. The improvement in their fraction fluency has been noticeable."
