Since its galactic launch in 2021, ExploreLearning Frax has been helping students develop a conceptual understanding of fractions using adaptive, game-based learning. Coming in fall 2025, Frax Sector 3 will allow students to level up their learning with all-new adventures that extend and deepen their understanding of fractions.
What is Frax Sector 3?
Along their Frax journey, students progress through missions grouped by Sectors that align to elementary grade-level fractions standards. Frax missions are structured as game-based challenges, allowing students to learn by doing as they progress through carefully scaffolded instruction.
- Sector 1: Students journey through 27 missions as they develop a strong understanding of fractions as numbers. Targets topics typically addressed in grade 3.
- Sector 2: After completing Sector 1, students unlock 30 new missions in Sector 2, where they expand their knowledge to fractions equivalency and early fractions arithmetic. Targets topics typically addressed in grade 4.
- Sector 3: This NEW Sector will allow students to use the foundations built in Sectors 1 and 2 to navigate new worlds and develop a strong mastery of grade 5 fraction arithmetic. Targets topics typically addressed in grade 5.
What’s included in Frax Sector 3?
Teachers have often asked, “Is there a Sector 3 in Frax?” Now, the wait is almost over! Check out what topics are covered in Frax Sector 3.
Key fraction concepts
- Adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators
- Multiplying fractions
- Dividing fractions
- Simplifying fractions
- Converting between mixed numbers and fractions greater than one
Exciting additions for students
- Exciting storylines
- Brand new games
- Expanded rewards and new ways to spend hard-earned tokens
New engaging fraction activities to deepen understanding
Research-based, engaging instruction remains a constant in Sector 3. Students and teachers can look forward to new action-packed fraction games, along with the ability to spend tokens in the new room, BotLand!
Sector 3 also includes Ancient Wisdoms, a new setting where students apply their knowledge of fraction arithmetic. In Ancient Wisdoms, students solve multi-step problems by focusing on real understanding rather than memorized procedures and tricks. The goal is to prepare students for success with paper and pencil work in an engaging setting with gems and other fun rewards.
How Sector 3 supports success in fractions
Sector 1 instruction lays the conceptual groundwork that the rest of Frax is built upon, helping students understand fractions as numbers. This allows students to represent and reason about fraction magnitude (size) using length models, number lines, and area models. Students develop key number line proficiency leveraged throughout Frax, which is crucial for long-term math success and algebra.
Teaching fractions is also simplified with Frax. As students progress from Sector 1 to Sector 3, they develop a mutual understanding of key concepts, skills, and vocabulary they can apply during teacher-led instruction. Students who develop a shared understanding of fractions can perform more complex fraction tasks with ease, allowing teachers greater autonomy and creativity to teach.
A two-year study found that the more students used Frax, the higher their achievement scores were, especially for the most academically at-risk students.
“The kids love Frax. I can’t wait for Sector 3.” –Renee Haltom, Teacher
A new Frax adventure awaits: Sector 3 arrives this fall
For the best results, teachers should use Frax before starting their fractions unit to propel learning and lay strong foundations. Since Sector 1 is designed as a zero-entry program, students with no previous fractions knowledge can begin using the program immediately to prepare for Sectors 2 and 3.
With Sector 3, students won’t just practice fractions—they’ll build a deeper, lasting mastery that prepares them for future math success. Experience Frax today with a free classroom trial, and get ready for Sector 3 to lift off this fall!
